The Pawsitive Paws Dog Training Program at Thomson Federal Prison trains service and support dogs while providing inmates with valuable skills and rehabilitation opportunities.

Program Overview

The Pawsitive Paws Dog Training Program is a partnership between FCI Thomson and a local Service Dog Foundation. It allows incarcerated individuals to train puppies over 12 to 18 months in basic obedience, public behavior, and advanced skills to become service, companion, or emotional support dogs for veterans and people with developmental, physical, or emotional disabilities 

Benefits for Inmates

Inmates participating in the program gain hands-on experience, life skills, and certifications, which can improve self-esteem and provide a sense of purpose. The program also contributes to a more positive and calm prison environment .

Community Impact

The trained dogs are placed with veterans and individuals with disabilities, offering essential support and improving quality of life. The program has grown from training just three dogs to preparing 13 service dogs, demonstrating its expanding impact on the community 

Challenges

Despite its success, the program faces challenges due to a staffing shortage of over 130 positions at Thomson Federal Prison. Union leaders have emphasized that addressing this staffing crisis is critical to sustaining the program and ensuring safety and effectiveness
